Trip to Pittsburgh

We're going on a trip!  SoPo took a road trip and ended up in Pittsburgh.  The city is home to the Steelers, the Warhol Museum, and bike friendliness.  Read on, see the pictures, and smile.

Framed by 3 rivers, the city is flat by the river and rises as you travel inland (picture the hills of Atlanta).  Even the hills don't stop the many bikers riding through the city.  While walking in downtown I see this big white dot with a bike on it.  It's huge and can't be missed but it's not just a mural, it signifies downtown bike parking.  What looks like green corrugated metal with the white dots is the sheltered bike parking.  As I keep walking at every bike rack I see, they are filled with bikes of all kinds.  Walking along Penn Ave, a main downtown street, I kept on seeing sharrows on the roadway. They even have a 'cycling track', not a velodrome but a half-mile oval loop with banked turns and a slight hill.  The Bud Harris Cycling Track hosts track and crit races including time trials.  Ah bike friendliness.

Also in Pittsburgh is Free Ride.  Free Ride is the SoPo of Pittsburgh.  The shop is located in Construction Junction where people can come in to recycle pretty much almost everything; paper and plastics to construction material.  So Free Ride fits nicely right in.  Unfortunately the shop was closed when I stopped by.  If you are ever in Pittsburgh, check their hours, and stop by.  Support your local bike cooperative and bike Pittsburgh.
