Sopo Recognizes Youth Mentor; The Funding Search Begins
Jonathan G., a recent addition to our volunteer family, was recognized as Sopo's Youth Mentor at our last general meeting. All along, we've been challenged by the youngest members of our community to make our shop a fun and supportive place to be. After trying to be fancy about having specific programming, it occurred to us that all we have to do is dedicate one special volunteer or staff person to the kids during ordinary shop hours. And it's working out beautifully. Since Jonathan has stepped into this role, the kids get to work on one collaborative project at a time and they shoo us away when we offer to help. Thanks, Jonathan, for helping us stay true to our goal of making Sopo accessible to everyone of all ages.
For our next trick, we'll find funding to support Jonathan in a paid role, at least for the summer, but preferably year-round. If you'd like to help us expand our capacity to meet the needs of our youngest community members, please visit our Donate page. He told us he would like a bubble gum pink Velocity Deep V fixed wheel set as partial payment. If any of y'all know a bike shop that would like to be recognized as partner in our Youth Programming, please let us know!
And for our next NEXT trick, we'll find a way for the kids to turn this into a micro-enterprise project so they can get paid for their hard work, too!
