Help Keep Sopo's Wheels Turning

Tucked back in EAV, a shop full of wrenches and spare parts is the homebase for one co-op that's trying to make it easier to swap out your four wheels for two. Sopo Bicycle Cooperative is a non-profit bike repair shop, where the Atlanta cycling community can donate parts and tools, fix their bikes, and help others do the same, in an effort to give easier access to cycling for all. The organization also provides programs for youngsters, bike rack installation for local businesses, and participates in the Earn-A-Bike program at the Taskforce for the Homeless.

Double Down Saturdays, the EABF Challenge

As you may know the East Atlanta Beer Fest gave SoPo a challenge. If SoPo can raise $2,000, they will match it.

We are taking the next step to help raise the money to take on EABF challenge. From now until we raise $2,000; all monies donated during our Saturday shop hours will go to our Stock The Shop Fund and it will be counted towards the EABF matching grant challenge!

So come by the shop to work on your bikes, bring some treats, the weather will get better and better, and get ready for more bike riding! Donate money on Saturday and help us meet this challenge. When we meet the $2,000 goal; its going to double thanks to the generosity of the East Atlanta Beer Fest!

If you can't make it on a Saturday and still want to make a donation for the EABF challenge. Stop by the shop during our open shop hours and let the shop manager know that you want your money to go to the EABF challenge. Mail us a check and place a note that its for the EABF challenge. Or donate through PayPal right here and it'll be added to the EABF challenge total.

My donation of: will help raise money for the matching grant!

As always, we appreciate your help and donations.

Charity Bikes January Donation

Everytime I look there are so many kids playing in the playground. And they can always use more bikes. For January, Charity Bikes made a donation of kids bikes to the Decatur First Christian Church community playground. It's a safe place to learn how to ride a bike. This is a great start for future bike riders.

Do you want to learn more about Charity Bikes, read all the info here on how you can get involved or find the next place to donate bikes to.

Thanks for 2011

Recap of the year
SoPo is very thankful
To many people

(SoPo Thanks for 2011 haiku)

2011 was a very busy year for SoPo. We rolled out some new programs. We brought back some old ones. 2011 may have been our last full year in the heart of East Atlanta and we made the most of it. We are lucky to be surrounded by a wonderful community that supports our mission. You will always be a part of us and you keep us inspired to do what we do.

There were familiar faces that have been with the shop for a while. There were new faces that joined the crew. Many have volunteered, donated, participated in on one of our events, fixed their bikes, visited, promoted/hosted our events, and supported SoPo. Our SoPo Board of Directors has grown and there are more SoPonistas involved as ever. To everyone we mentioned and those we did not, you make SoPo what it is and we thank you!

Read the full story for a recap of our year and more of our thank you's.

Thank You Metro Atlanta Cycling Club

The Metro Atlanta Cycling Club has donated to SoPo a check for $1000 to help fund out 2012 Summer Kids Program. We can't thank MACC enough for their generous grant. It will go a long way for our kids program. We look forward to our partnership for the 2012 kids summer program. There is much to discuss and plan; and we would definitely want to have MACC involved.

MACC President Greg Masterson attended our volunteer appreciation party to present a check to SoPo Board President Titio Sands.

MACC has been a long time supporter of SoPo. Every year they hold their One Love Century ride in South Fulton to raise money for several charities. For 2012, please come out and ride the One Love Century and support MACC, its charities, and SoPo.

About MACC

OUR MISSION: "To promote cycling in the black community and build camaraderie among all cyclists."

The Metro Atlanta Cycling Club (MACC) began in the mid 80's out of the now defunct Yellow Jersey Bicycle Shop in South Dekalb. The Yellow Jersey Bicycle Shop opened its doors not only to serve the cycling community, but also to bring awareness of the sport to the black community. The club's founding members, Larry Anderson and Dikobe McFarlane, shared the same vision and as a result, started MACC. Some of the club's original members who were instrumental in developing the club included Larry and Betty Anderson, Stan and Julie Foster, Art Durden, Marvin Anderson, Curtis Cobb, Dikobe McFarlane, Walter Williams, Stan Smith, Melvin Washington, Stefan Hood, and Fred Butler.

Learn more about MACC here.

Complete Streets DeKalb

SoPo recently took part in an effort to make Complete Streets DeKalb. What is complete streets? You can read more about it here. Basically it is designing streets so they are made for everyone from pedestrians, bikes, and cars. Complete streets are safer, more livable, and welcoming to everyone.

How did SoPo end up getting involved? Well, a couple of the things we hear so often is the streets are crazy and made for cars, there are no bikeable paths, safety keeps people from riding, etc. Well complete streets addresses those issues. If the streets are safer, there would be more bikes on the road. More bikes equals more need for SoPo.

Bicycles – the lifeline of last resort

I found this post very interesting because it puts some perspective on the value of community bike shops and how we help keep bikes on the road. From Progressive Blogic:

While I like to tout how often I bike commute to work or ride for recreational purposes, I am fortunate enough to be able to afford a car and also to have those opportunities. My bicycle is my commuting mode of choice during fair weather, but if it is necessary due to scheduling or weather conditions, I will drive my car instead.

Automobile/highway advocates often think that bicycling by adults is only a fitness kick of middle-age or the middle class. They couldn't be further from the truth. Sadly, for far too many Americans, bicycling is the only viable option for getting to work, shopping, and for running other errands. Why, you may ask? Several reasons:

Kidical Mass Grant Park Recap

The day started out overcast and drizzly. But parents and kids came anyways and their smiles made the day brighter. Kidical Mass Grant Park rode out at 10am on Sunday November 20th. There were about 40 kids and parents that showed up for the ride. There were familiar faces from Kidical Mass in Decatur. There were a lot of new faces for Grant Park. Stickers, spoke cards, lights, pins, and bells were handed out to riders. It was amazing to see the kids ride so fast up the hills. There was one who rode his balance bike the whole route and he was up front leading the group on some of the harder hills.

Kidical Mass is truly awesome! Join us for the next one. We're still planning out where the next one will be. Hopefully we can ride in the West End area.  Here are a couple of photos.

Thanks to everyone who participated! You make this ride as special and as fun as it should be. Thanks to the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition for helping put this event together. Thanks to the Grant Park community and the Grant Park Farmers Market for embracing this event. And special thanks to Atiba, the Metro Atlanta Cycling Club,  and the Dream Team for escorting the group through the neighborhood.

If you have any additional photos to share, want to get involved, or have a question; please email Corny at corny@sopobikes.org.

SoPo Ambassadors

What happens when your tie drops out of your pocket and falls into your fixed gear cog? First, your tie is toast. Second, you need a 15mm wrench to loosen the rear wheel and help take out the tie. And this is how I met Aaron. Up in the city where the dream of the 90's is alive (that's Portland) they have the 21 Ambassadors program. Portland's BTA wrote a nice article about them. The Ambassadors ride as they do and help out cyclist who need it. I've always thought it was a cool idea. And who knows it may become a program in Atlanta.

For now there is Aaron. Read on for more of the story.

The Beer Bear Giveth

The East Atlanta Beer Fest Rocks!

We are in an incredible neighborhood that truly supports the community. The East Atlanta Beer Fest is a super fun event. Not only that, it is an organization that provides grants to other organizations within the community. The EABF truly helps East Atlanta.

So it makes SoPo proud to be the recipient of a 2011 East Atlanta Beer Fest Grant. The grant will be used to Stock The Shop. As a community bike shop we use a lot of stuff. While we do our best to recycle (pun intended) and reuse as much as we can; we still need to purchase some stuff. This grant will go a long way to help stock the shop so we can continue to help out cyclists.

But the giving doesn't stop there. EABF gave SoPo a challenge. They are offering a matching grant of $2,000 if we raise $2,000 by October 20, 2012. Are we up for the challenge? Yes we are! We are coming up with creative ways to raise the money and we are excited to do it.

Do you want to help? We hope you can and here's where you can start.

ABC Bike Traffic Counts

From the ABC...

Volunteer for bicycle traffic counts Sept 27 & 29

As bicycle commuting grows across Atlanta and the country, the lack of data on bicycle traffic impedes the ability of cities and counties to provide bicycle infrastructure to meet the growing demand. That's why ABC starting conducting bicycle traffic counts in spring 2008. Our semi-annual bicycle traffic counts have proven extremely useful in prioritizing future bike transportation projects, addressing safety concerns, and guiding our education and advocacy program. You can help - our next bicycle traffic count will take place Tuesday September 27 and Thursday 29, with one Saturday count October 1. Click here to sign up!

Celebrating a Summer of Learning and Fun

During the Summer we hosted interns for the International Rescue Committee.  Shee Nay, So Moo, and Moo Kue were incredible interns and we are proud they are a part of the SoPo community. During their last night they also shared some home cooking with the shop (Note: Bringing food to the shop is a plus.). Here's an article from the Atlanta IRC about this past Summer internship program, SoPo got a nice mention in the article.

Celebrating a Summer of Learning and Fun

Each summer the IRC in Atlanta offers an enrichment program for refugee teenagers to learn about aspects of life in the US that do not come up at school. This summer the 62 youth who participated in the program were honored at a special culmination celebration for their efforts to delve deeper into life and culture in Atlanta, their new home.

Communicycle Clarkston Is Coming

SoPo went to a meeting this past weekend about a new community bike shop in Clarkston and the news was incredible.  We want to share this news with everyone.  From the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition newsletter:

Communicycle Co-op's New Location!

The Communicycle Co-op is excited to announce the upcoming launch of a new bicycle co-op location in Clarkston, GA. Operating in a space provided by the Clarkston Community Center, Communicycle Clarkston will serve members of the local community with affordable bicycle repair and education.

The shop has been operating in the International Village (near Buford Highway in Chamblee) for over three years, serving adult and youth participants each Tuesday night beginning at 6pm. Since opening in 2008, Communicycle has distributed over 200 bicycles to people with transportation needs and has assisted countless others with bicycle repair services. Clarkston is home to thousands of refugees from around the world, many of whom have a difficult time securing sustainable means of transportation. Communicycle is excited to offer the services of a bicycle cooperative to this wonderfully diverse community.

Anyone is welcome to participate or volunteer at either of Communicycle's locations. The Chamblee shop operates Tuesday nights from 6-8pm. Open hours at the Clarkston location will be announced soon.

If you are interested in getting involved at either location, please send an email to ride@communicycle.us.

And don't forget about their workday on Saturday August 13th at 10am.  We'll post more information about the grand opening soon.

BeltLine Bike Shop Summer Porch Pics

Thanks to the BeltLine Bike Shop, Becky, Tim, and the neighbors in Adair Park for hosting the Porch Crawl.  Here are some pics from the event.  And you can also read and see more pics from the BeltLine Bike Shop site here.

Becky and Tim are the founders and their home was the first on the crawl. They told the story of how the shop started in their home with a young girl who needed help with her homework and one day did not show up with her bike because of a flat tire. They offered to help fix her bike in exchange for doing some chores. They began getting to know other children in the area and started an earn a bike program where kids picked up trash to earn a bike which could be upgraded once they put enough hours into working on their bike at the shop. At other homes visited they told of the positive impact the shop has had on the neighborhood by giving the neighborhood children a positive outlet. The kids have earned 133 bikes so far.

Kidical Mass Recap

Wow!  Kidical Mass is Awesome!  There were close to 50 kids and adults for the ride from Harmony Park in Oakhurst to Little Shop of Stories in Decatur Square.  The sun was shining and everyone was really enthusiastic.  The hills couldn't dampen our spirits.  We rode as a group through the neighborhoods and on Ponce heading into Decatur.  All the way through we were being cheered on in the neighborhoods.  Kids and parents at parks gave us waves and cheers as we passed by.  When we rode by the big windows of Thumbs Up Diner, it seemed as though every person, had their faces pressed against the windows watching our little parade.  And as we pulled into Little Shop of Stories, there were sweet treats waiting for us.

Here's what we heard:

"Slow-moving cuteness!"
"We really went somewhere, Dad!"
"Look! We're takin' over the WHOLE road!"

Here are some pictures from the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, TwoTone, and SoPo.

Thanks to everyone that participated, the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, Little Shop of Stories, and Chantelle from the Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons.  We look forward to the next one.  Stay tuned, the next ride will be in the Grant Park neighborhood.

Skids and Tricks Recap

Here's Bobby's recap of skids and tricks.  Like Bobby said, even though we didn't have a skid competition, this gives everyone some time to practice for Broken Hearts 8...

This year's Broken Hearts and Bicycle Parts followed a different race format and similarly had a slightly different style for the post-race skids and tricks competition. The skids and tricks competition this year included several bicycle field day events to give additional opportunities for participants to compete and win choice prizes.

Thank You!

Hey folks,

Just wanted to take the chance to say our sincerest thank you to everyone who made this past weekend possible. This means everyone who took any part in the group ride or cook out Friday, staffed a checkpoint, helped with registration, or rode in the alleycat Saturday, all of the bands, everyone who danced, and everyone who ate and watched cartoons Sunday. A huge thanks to everyone who helped organize this year, sought out sponsors, collected donations, posted up fliers, and came up with the route - it takes a special kind of madness to do this every year. An equally humongous thank you to everyone who has supported us through out the years. Volunteers past, present, and future as well as visitors and the folks who recommend us to their friends with busted up bicycles. We're all extremely grateful to call Atlanta home and be a part of a community who loves us enough to come out to our shop and our events and to sweat, fret, and scramble all in the name of a good time.

You're amazing and we love you.

Love,
Sopo Bicycle Cooperative

If you have any pictures, recaps, and comments you'd like to share; let us know.  We want to hear about it.  Send us an email.

Pics and videos are coming soon!

It's Wednesday And Broken Hearts Is This Weekend

Broken Hearts is only a couple of more days.  It starts with our social ride from Woodruff Park and ending at Fallen Arrows HQ.  Saturday is the scavenger hunt, registration is at 3, race at 4.  And on Sunday is our vegan brunch at WonderRoot.

I bring this up because I've been putting flyers on people bikes, handing them out as they pass me on their bike, there were a couple of times where I handed a flyer out while both on bikes and passing each other on the Path.  And also because I saw Mr Friday's bike this afternoon with his new/old seat.  So I left a flyer in his pedals.

Tune up those bikes and get it ready for this weekend.  The shop is open tonight, tomorrow night and we'll be closed on Saturday for the race.  Everyone is invited!  See you this weekend!

Freewheelin' SoPo

I stopped by the Atlanta REI store and happen to pick up a copy of the Southern Bicycle League's Freewheelin' magazine.  It was the January 2011 issue and on page 14 is 'The SoPo Story' by Teresa Sylvester.  It is a well written article that goes into our history including the original post on the SBL site; quoted some volunteers, showed our rules, how to get involved.  It sums up our shop. Thanks Teresa.

One of the best parts of the article is a mention of the giant Cadillac baby carriage.  If you have a chance, pick up the issue, check the SBL site, and read about SoPo.

Jails, Trash, and McAfee Road

If you want to take an intown tour this Sunday the 27th, the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition is riding a Jails, Trash, and McAfee Road ride.  Here's some more info, I promise it will be interesting...

This intown tour will take us past multiple incarceration facilities, a landfill, and the little-known McAfee Road. Of the three, only McAfee poses a threat to you – with 6 steep hills packed into a straight-as-an-arrow 3.3 mile stretch. This ride has some great lightly-traveled sections of road, yet never ventures outside of I-285. Expect a brisk pace (16-19 mph) in the lead group; and smaller groups following at slower speeds. The long option is 40 miles, with a shorter option of 22. The group will eat lunch at Manuel's Tavern. Directions from Downtown Connector: East on North Avenue 2.1 miles, right on N. Highland, then park in the first parking lot on the right. Please find a spot closest to N. Highland Avenue. Closest MARTA station is Inman Park - transit directions). For more information email David Southerland or call 404-933-4541.

Thanks for 2010

Thank You!

There are many to thank for 2010. We thank the people who come to SoPo to learn to work on their bikes. We thank the folks who make donations to the shop. We thank all who rode in this year's Broken Hearts scavenger hunt. We thank the volunteers, shop managers, volunteer coordinator, and other shop SoPonistas for their time, effort, and dedication.  There are many to thank and probably missed, so big thanks, big hug, and a big SoPo fist bump to all.

Thanks for 2010 and looking forward to 2011.

Sopo at Atlanta Streets Alive!!

Hey everybody!

Sunday, October 17 is Atlanta Streets Alive!! Atlanta Streets Alive was inspired by the ciclovia in Bogotá, Colombia, where city streets are closed to car traffic to allow people to participate in all kinds of free health and community-oriented events. Thirty years after the first program, the concept has spread around the world from Tokyo, Japan to Kiev, Ukraine. Now we are bringing it to Atlanta!

This is free, fun, and an awesome way to get out and play in our finally fall weather!!!

Sopo is going to be working with a bike rodeo and setting up a mini-Sopo Opposite of Hurt Park (In front of Woodruff Volunteer Service Center bldg at 100 Edgewood)  during Atl. Streets Alive and we're looking for help!! This means you! Yes, you! Come help out at our on-site Sopo with minor adjustments and tune-ups. Let's help our friends learn while they're out to play!

If you're interested in helping please respond to dianna@sopobikes.org

Riding in the Snow

After posting a bit on winter riding, today was a day I can actually put it into practice.  First there is bundling up.  I was layered several times over, several tops, 2 layers of pants, winter hat under the helmet, 2 pairs of gloves, and..plastic grocery bags under the socks.  Second is the bike.  It was a cyclocross bike with knobby tires, now it's a commuter with skinny smooth tires.  Should have kept the knobby tires because I was slippin and slidin.  Third, it was a lot of fun to ride home.  It might have been cold, it might have been wet, but it was fun, like playing in the...snow.  Check out some pics.

Light Up The Night Atlanta

Last Friday night the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition sponsored an event called "Light Up The Night."  ABC was promoting safety while riding at night.  That means have some lights and be visible to other vehicles.  They were giving away bike lights, front and rear, that can easily clip on to bikes.  After gathering at Woodruff Park, there was a group ride, courteous mass style, to Castleberry Berry Hill for their Le Flash Atlanta event.

SoPo rides a Century

On Saturday September 5th a crew from SoPo rode in the Metro Atlanta Cycling Club's One Love Century.  Team SoPo brought out our bikes all built and/or maintained at the shop.  Thanks to MACC for a great event.  As several of us have never ridden a Century, MACC made it a great experience.  Their rest stops had all the necessities and enthusiastic volunteers who kept cheering us on.

Kate Wins Sopo's Invention Contest

On July 6, we challenged you, our community, to invent a solution for a common problem at the shop: without a place to put tools temporarily while we're working, we stash them in pockets or on the ground, and then they get lost or damaged.  Kate, a volunteer, came up with a brillant submission:it's  a milk jug fashioned into a bucket that we can attach to any repair stand with a busted tube.  Holy resourceful!  Congratulations, Kate!  She wins a $50 gift certificate to Memorial Tattoo!  In related news, we need plastic milk jugs.

Sopo is all about helping each other fix bikes; not so much about giving away bikes

It's time to get back to basics at the Sopo shop (queue dream sequence): it was a cold night in 2004 when a bunch of folks got together to figure out how to share some bike repair tools and help each other use them.  We dreamed up a mission that was all about making bike repair affordable.  And then we made a program to help us achieve that mission, which we still enjoy today.  It's the Sopo shop, of course.  Bike distribution was never in the plan, but we've been happy to take bike donations from you and make them available to the bikeless for a suggested donation.  Now we're at capacity in the shop and we've got to cut back on the things that aren't in the mission.  So if you need a bike, you'll have to look elsewhere for the moment.  If you'd like to donate a bike, we'll only accept complete ones, and we'll make them available at a later date.  Other bikes can be taken to Taskforce for the Homeless where we helped develop a bike shop called Shift.  If anyone out there wants to dream up a bike distribution program like Decatur Yellow Bike's "Adopt-A-Bike" program, do it!  Atlanta needs it!

Join Team Sopo at MACC's One Love Century (September 5)

macc ridersThe Metro Atlanta Cycling Club raises money for our youth program with their annual One Love Century, and we're going to turn out this year.  Join Team Sopo, a rowdy crowd of Sopo volunteers, kids, shop users, staff, parents, and friends on September 5 to ride the 27, 43, 63 or 100 mile loop.  The $25 registration includes a t-shirt, rest stops every 10-15 miles, and after-ride reggae party ($35 after August 21).  You can register online and we'll have hardcopies of the registration form in the shop.  Remember to put "Team Sopo" down for your team name, and let us know that you're in so we can coordinate transportation to the start of the ride.  If you'd like to sponsor one of our kids, head over to our Donate page and enter your contribution where it says "Youth Program."

Bike Saviours Visits

Last weekend Lindsay from Bike Saviours came into town to visit.  She travelled from Tempe, AZ to Atlanta, GA by way of the Bonnaroo Music Festival with a rear wheel.  She was intent on using that rear wheel and racing in the weekend's Photo Cat Race.  She visited the shop, met some folks, and was looking for a bike to put the rear wheel onto.  She got hooked up with a loaner and was off racing.  The Photo Cat Race was a benefit for Sopo and put on by Elliott St Pub and the Krewe of Grateful Gluttons.  Thanks to all the people who put on the race.  Check out the Photo Cat Race site for more pictures.  Here's just a sample of great photos from their site.

Thank you to Keep North Fulton Beautiful

Thank you to Keep North Fulton Beautiful.  Twice in June they put on their bulky trash/recycling days.  For both days Sopo collected over 50 bikes that were gathering dust or destined for a landfill.  Now these bikes will be back on the road with a little TLC from Sopo.  Thanks to Keep North Fulton Beautiful for allowing Sopo to collect the bikes.  We hope you will continue to put on your event three times a year or more.  Thanks to all the volunteers with trucks that helped haul bikes down from Sandy Springs and Johns Creek.  Without you, this would not have been possible.

Keep North Fulton Beautiful is conducting their 2nd bulky trash/recycling day on Saturday, June 27, and they've again invited us to take all of the bikes they collect.  Last year they collected 50; earlier this month we took to SoPo about 40 bikes!  This is happening at Medlock Bridge Shopping Center in Johns Creek, link, from 9 am to 2 pm.  We could use your help.  Can you help pick up the bikes?  Please email info@sopobikes.org!  The bikes will go to a storage site because we won't have room for all of them at the Sopo shop.  Thanks to eveyone who helped out last time and hope you can do it again.

Bike Touring Essentials Needed for Social Justice Bike Journey

Friend of Sopo and community organizing superstar Paris Hatcher is heading off to the West Coast to join the Spoke N' Heart Bike Collective, a women's bike tour that explores empowerment and social justice along the way (7/3 - 7/20).  Paris needs a few essentials for her tour, and if we can help her out, she'll put the Sopo logo on her gear, send us a love note from the road, and othewise spread joy about us.  And it would be nice to support her anyway since she does such great work with Spark Reproductive Justice Now!  If you can help, Paris needs the follow items (drop them off at Sopo and let us know it's for her):

  • 2 panniers
  • Bike rack (to attach the panniers to her bicycle - must be capable of supporting at least 50 pounds of weight)
  • 2 Tire patch kit (patch kit should come with patches, glue and sandpaper. Don’t buy a glue-less patch kit)
  • 2 One liter bicycle water bottles
  • 3 Bungee cords of assorted size
  • 1 Durable bicycle cable lock
  • 1 Three liter water hydration pack (Camelbak or Platypus are two name brands)
  • Bike Shorts
  • Cycling computer (for tracking mileage - Cateye is one brand)
  • Rear-view mirror

Wish List: UPDATED!

Thanks to everyone who's checked in to see what's on our wish list these days.  The good news is, the shop is pretty well stocked with tools (if you wanna bring us something, though, we'll be more than happy to put it to use).  Our biggest challenge is supplying people with: chains, rear wheels, and essential accessories like helmets, u-locks, and lights.  So if you'd like to make an in kind contribution to the shop, that's how you can make the biggest impact.  As always, we accept bike donations year round.

How you can help the Fugees Family

Wow!  We've received an overwhelming amount of correspondance this week about the Fugees Family's need for bicycles for their summer literacy program.  We assure you, we've been in contact with the Family for quite some time working on how exactly Sopo can be a resource.  We've invited the Family to use the shop, and we've offered them what bikes we can, but we're tapped out for the moment, and we need the big donation that's coming in for our entire community (which, of course, includes the Family, AND also includes tons of other people in need).  So here's how YOU can make a HUGE IMPACT: start asking around for bikes in your community or neighborhood and donate them directly to the Family.  In related news, one of our International Rescue Committee interns from 2006, Yonatan, is working on getting a community bike shop going in Clarkston where all of these refugee resettlement organizations are located.  Perhaps we can direct some of this kindness and energy into getting that going.

Sopo Welcomes Our International Rescue Committee Teen Interns

Say hello to Laxmi, Birendra, and Purna, our most excellent teen interns.  We're very proud to be spending our fourth summer as an intern site for the International Rescue Committee with them.  The whole IRC teen crew is dedicating the season to learning about sustainability, so guess who's on the fieldtrip list!  Yep, it's us!  Help us welcome EVERYONE to the shop next Thursday, June 11, at 7 pm.  In related refugee resettlement news, we've got teens from the Fugees Family building bikes to use for transportation to and from literacy classes.  WOW!  A little bit of sharing bike repair makes a big difference, don'tcha think?

Sopo Bike in Action

Since starting to volunteer at Sopo I have been more aware of cyclists on the road.  I have noticed there are bike commuters who I am one of and there are packs of cyclists who look like they are training for a race.  Curiosity got to me and I wanted to find about these group rides who seem to be everywhere, everyday of the week.  And I wanted to do it all on my Sopo Franken-Bike.

Thanks to all the doctors and physicians that send new shop visitors our way!  It's exciting when folks come to the shop to get their bikes and themselves into healthier shape.  One shop visitor's doctor recommended replacing a few short car trips per week with bike trips.  That sounds like a prescription for a healthier person AND a healthier Atlanta.  Let us know if Sopo is a part of your wellness plan.  Maybe we can help y'all get together for group rides and other fun get healthy bike stuff.

Jessica builds bike; we see rainbows

jessica and her bikeJessica built her new ride at Sopo over the course of a few days, and we had no choice but to watch her project come together.  We think it had something to do with her multicolored polkadotted Deep-Vs with green hubs and white spokes, traffic cone orange decal-less Mercier TT, pink chain and gold Kazane cog (picked up at No Brakes!), blue Pake cranks and chainring, green saddle and pink bar tape (picked up at Skate Escape!), and purple brake lever.  She's been rocking the 100% Sopo-style franken-bike for a good while (and excellent choice, of course), inadvertently becoming a hub rebuilding guru, and otherwise working towards building her dream bike.  And here it is...

Sopo is SO busy... How busy IS IT?

We have completed the headache inducing task of recording those sign in sheets we kindly ask you to sign, and here's what we've learned about January and February 2009: 275 individuals have come through to help out, get some help, get a bike, find parts, make a donation, and say hi.  The shop's been accessed more than 600 times, with most repeat visitors returning to help or do a little bike repair.  And the weather's been mostly lousy.  It's probably going to get busier in there as it gets warmer out, so please bring your patience with you...there are only so many tools and volunteers to go around.  Speaking of which, we're always looking for new volunteers and donations (tools and bikes)!  Get in touch if you're interested!

TUESDAY: Tell your Senator and Representatives to Support Funding for Bike Transportation

Yes you can have an impact on bike transportation spending in the State of Georgia!  Our good friends at Atlanta Bicycle Campaign called to let us know that Senate Bill 39 and House Bill 277, bills that wound create funding (via sales tax) for local transit projects, left bicycling of the list.  If you want local governments to have the option of spending their portion on bike projects, ABC says our best bet is to call up our Representatives and Senators and urge them to: Support funding for bicycle transportation purposes.  SB 39 and HB 277 should allow local government to spend its sales tax revenue according to local priorities, including bicycle projects.  You can find your Representatives and Senator at www.votesmart.org.  Head on over to ABC's website to find out more!

Thank you for taking care of the shop...and each other!

The bad news is, and you may have heard already, that your friend Rachael at Sopo (that's me) survived a home invasion, armed robbery, and assault last week.  That's why you haven't seen much of me at the shop lately.  First of all, THANK YOU to everyone who has been taking care of the shop and all of the wonderful people in it.  Secondly, if you're thinking you'd like to help me out, you can volunteer at the shop.  Pitching in counts more to me and Sopo than anything.  Remember, the shop is intended to be a safe space.  Being supportive of all kinds of people is the way to prevent terrible things, like what happened to me, from happening in the first place.  Finally, we're having a benefit on Thursday night at the Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge.  There you'll get a chance to meet City Councilperson Natalyn Archibong, and we'll have progressive organizations there to teach us about their grassroots efforts to create a safe and fair world.  Ride safe, y'all.

Southeast, just like Bike!Bike!, but with a southern regional flavor (from Thursday, 1/22/09 through Sunday 1/25/09).  We need help planning it, developing and facilitating workshops, and finding our fellow organizers who are out there in smaller towns and neighborhoods who may not know about the rest of us yet!  As always, holler if you want to get involved!  A community bike shop for every community!  Wouldn't that be nice?

ABC and Public Works to fix parallel grates problem

Taskforce for the Homeless bike shop built out and muralized

A year ago, a high school student and a recent college grad* shared an idea: Sopo-like services would be awfully useful at a homeless shelter.  If you put skill building and affordable transportation together, you get the makings for a great job-readiness project that's also environmentally friendly.  And we, as in all of us, benefit if that project is about bikes!  Fastforward to today.  Read on for pictures of the space we built out for the shop at Taskforce.  Check out the fabulous Excite Bike mural our friends at WonderRoot painted in there.  We've got a few shelves and some tools.  Holler if you'd like to help complete the space by donating tools, shop supplies, or your time.

The bike blender visits GSU's Energy Fair, makes friends with the Howlies and a solar powered PA

Georgia State University's Sustainable Energy Tribe knows how to get down!  They graciously invited us to participate in today's Energy Fair.  So we bike blendered all afternoon while the Howlies rocked out through a solar powered PA system!  Believe it!  The Howlies were so good, we had to ask if they would play Broken Hearts 5, which is months and months away, so we shall see.  A special thanks goes out to Sopo regulars Porscha and Jasmine for enthusiastically making the blender scene.  On a final note, holy wow, GSU, you have so many bikes parked all over anything lock-to-able!  We've never seen so many bikes on campus!  You need more bike racks.  Call us about that, ok?  Pictures ahead.

The adventures of Jar Jar and Pooh Bear, Sopo's littlest bike mechanics

Second graders Jar Jar and Pooh Bear came to the shop on Sunday.  Some kind of unscrupulous person stole one of their bikes, they told us (yes, they said "unscrupulous").  Sopo Volunteer Corny offered to help these genius mechanics build a bike from scratch.  And then we learned exactly how the radio mysteriously gets louder whenever Lil Wayne or T.I. plays (which is often.  Paper Trail is excellent, by the way).  Pictures ahead.

Our longtime supporters make sure we eat well and rock out

In the spirit of celebrating our 3 year shop anniversary, here's a big thank you for a couple of our longtime supporters.  These folks turned out when Sopo wasn't much more than an idea and a reason to have a potluck or two with 50 strangers.  And they've stuck with us ever since.  Bean at Lenny's threw our first Broken Hearts and Bicycle Parts, an event that's grown into a festival, and we're coming up on our fifth annual in a few months.  Criminal Records tossed us a few gift certificates then, and now they collect donations for us at the register.  Phil at Radial Cafe has no problem with our strange, off the menu vegan orders that keep our revelers fed, and he graciously hosted our Bike Frame Show there earlier this year.  We've been a Sevananda Be the Change organization twice now, and we're happy to be included in Atlanta's co-op family.

Back in the day...

We're coming up on three years of operating out of the shop...the one you know, that is.  Before we moved into our space in East Atlanta, the shop was at Jay's house (and at Chewy's house, too, for a minute there).  Operating like that was more difficult than we imagined, so our shop anniversary is always a big deal.  We were lucky, though, because we met some great people at the house-shop, like Calvin and Clifford.  They were 6th grade students when Sopo got started, and they've been watching us grow up all along.  We hope they're impressed.  Photos ahead.

Sopo's Weekend of Doing Good in the Community with Other Amazing Organizations

Sopo made the rounds this weekend.  How?  We're not sure, because we were awfully busy at the shop on Saturday and Sunday.  We still managed to be a part of the Other Sound Festival, a three day whirlwind tour of the Atlanta music scene.  In fact, OSF raised some bucks for us at their festival preparty on September 5 at Railroad Earth.

We were thrilled to spend the opening night of OSF at WonderRoot.  We love those guys and what they're doing to make the arts available to everyone.  AND we brought the bike blender to Trees Atlanta on Saturday for a little party they were throwing at their new facility in Reynoldstown.  The blender spent some time at C.A.R.E. last weekend, too.

Sopo is awfully lucky to have such great friends who are doing fantastic, super positive community empowerment work.  They're conserving the environment, ending global poverty, and sharing the arts.  It's hard work...we know!  So THANK YOU, everyone, for pitching in and doing good!

Emily's Letter to Whole Foods is Totally Positive!

"Dear Ms. Sifford,

I am writing to ask you to reschedule your planned 5% day to benefit the Earn-a-Bike program, and by doing so reinstate your committment to Atlanta's Taskforce for the Homeless.  For many people one of the most important factors in retaining a job is having transportation to their workplace.  The Earn-a-Bike program helps people find a way out of homelessness and poverty.

Whole Foods has always supported sustainability, positive action, and community empowerment, and I hope that the store continues to stand by these principles. Please stay strong and reaffirm Whole Foods' promise to help some of Atlanta's least fortunate residents.

Sincerely,
Emily K. Brock, Ph.D

Filming at the Shop with Batata Doce

filming with batata doceThe Sopo crew is awfully creative when it comes to making instructional materials, doing outreach, and raising funds and friends.  With our friend Eric Holder of Industrial Strength Promotions, and his friend Ramsey, and his other friend Jason Drakeford, formerly of Super Deluxe, and Jason's friend Matt Raufman (got all that?), we started filming our first installment of This Bike Could Be Your Life.

The show concept is this: we demonstrate basic bike repairs with the help of our famous musician friends who also play a song or two in the shop.  The show is complete with a theme song by Judi Chicago and Electric Company and Sesame Street-style animation.  Each episode will be about 10 minutes long, and air on some kind of internet video channel.  We're planning a totally fun premiere party, so stay tuned for the date and location!

Batata Doce, one of Sopo's favorite bands, spent last Thursday night with us, turning the shop into a show space, and Open Hours into a party.  Check out Jay's video of the videographers making a video...

Councilperson Natalyn Archibong Says Hi at Brownwood Bike Rally, and the Cutest Wheeltruer Ever

rachael and natalynLast weekend's Brownwood Bicycle Rally, a benefit for the East Atlanta Kids Club, brought the most fun you could have on a Saturday morning.  There's really nothing quite like sweeping a kids' criterium race while the DJ puts T-Pain in heavy rotation, and then following that up with sharing Snow Cones with the Sopo youths who insisted upon doing their own repairs at our repair station.  Funny how they suddenly know exactly how to adjust their stems when it's time to show off.  A marvellous day was had by all.  We even got a special visit from our City Councilperson, Natalyn Archibong.  She wants us to help her get a bike.  Something comfy.

How To Build Wheels And Support Our Youth Programming All At The Same Time!

event flyerTrue to Sopo-style, we managed to drum up the best kind of support for our youth programming. Our friends at Perros Libres, Inc., generously donated the cash we needed to get the parts (discounted for us by Intown Bikes) to build Jonathan's wheels. And now you get to benefit, too, because we're hosting a wheel building workshop with those parts on Monday, June 23, from 7 pm until 10 pm.  The workshop will be led by Rob, Intown's service manager.

If you'd like to lace and true wheels with us, and if you need parts, go see Rob.  He'll tell you everything you need to know (spokes come in all sorts of measurements!).  You can call Intown at 4-872-1736 or visit them at their store (at 10th/Virginia and Monroe, across the street from Park Tavern).

We're asking for a small donation if you come to learn ($0 - $10 sliding scale).  All proceeds will go into our youth programming fund!  We'll work on having food and drinks.  It might turn into a party.  You know how we do.

Sopo Recognizes Youth Mentor; The Funding Search Begins

JonathanJonathan G., a recent addition to our volunteer family, was recognized as Sopo's Youth Mentor at our last general meeting.  All along, we've been challenged by the youngest members of our community to make our shop a fun and supportive place to be.  After trying to be fancy about having specific programming, it occurred to us that all we have to do is dedicate one special volunteer or staff person to the kids during ordinary shop hours.  And it's working out beautifully.  Since Jonathan has stepped into this role, the kids get to work on one collaborative project at a time and they shoo us away when we offer to help.  Thanks, Jonathan, for helping us stay true to our goal of making Sopo accessible to everyone of all ages.

jonathan and kidsFor our next trick, we'll find funding to support Jonathan in a paid role, at least for the summer, but preferably year-round.  If you'd like to help us expand our capacity to meet the needs of our youngest community members, please visit our Donate page.  He told us he would like a bubble gum pink Velocity Deep V fixed wheel set as partial payment.  If any of y'all know a bike shop that would like to be recognized as partner in our Youth Programming, please let us know!

kidsAnd for our next NEXT trick, we'll find a way for the kids to turn this into a micro-enterprise project so they can get paid for their hard work, too!

Our Kids Fix and Give Away Bicycles to Friends and Family

Our youngest community members continue to astound us with their initiative and sense of sharing.   Today, Dontez fixed up a bike for his mother for Mother's Day.  It was a surprise gift.  Later, Miguel came by to say that he had given all of his bicycles away to his friends who had none.  It's about time for a bigger bike anyway (I swear, they're all going to be bigger than me in less than a year).

We're working hard to make sure we have the resources it takes to make the shop welcoming to our youngest friends. One volunteer, Jonathan G., is stepping into a volunteer youth mentor role, which is making a world of difference in the shop.  Now the kids have one go-to person who helps keep them on task.  You ought to come by and watch them all work together.  They're all bike maintenance geniuses and excellent project collaborators!  Our goal is to create a paid youth mentor position so we can provide this kind of support year-round.  If you'd like to support our youth programming, please click the DONATE button to the left or give us a holler to see how you can help.

Broken Hearts and Bicycle partsWe're still recovering and tying up loose ends, but I think we agree that Broken Hearts and Bicycle Parts 4 was a raging success.  Highlights include: flaming burlesque in Lenny's parking lot, Atlanta Sedition Orchestra backing up Judi Chicago for a big electro marching band community jam, the SUV piñata treat shower, 150 people riding in the scavenger hunt, jazzercizing on Carroll Street, giving the stink eye at Grant Central, chowing down at Sopo, getting your various glamor shots taken, chowing some more at brunch, and otherwise falling in love with your favorite community bicycle repair shop in Atlanta (that's us!).  Stay tuned for stats and pictures.  And, of course, none of this would have been possible without the love and support of everyone who shared with us their time, goods, resources, services, energy, creativity, well wishes, and high fives.

This is the coolest thing I've done all week

So says Sopo first timer Romero. Rafael, a recent addition to the volunteer family, helped Romero assemble most of his bike on Tuesday night. A bit presumptuous, eh? Being so resolute about the best thing one did all week when it's only Tuesday. We're so much fun.

Meanwhile, we had a merch making party on Wednesday night. We narrowly avoided silk screen disintegration disaster by finding another Sopo screen that someone else (Sandra?
